It is regarded as the culmination of their co-operation. This production is claimed to be the first for some centuries to present the work as it would have been seen by King Louis XIV and his court. English speaking audiences familiar with Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme know it as a play. Those of us who are French opera buffs may also be acquainted with the Leonhardt CD of the musical component of the play. This extraordinarily beautiful and energetic production by Le Poeme Harmonique combines the two. Because the entire production is candlelit - a row of partly concealed candles serving as footlights - the faces, which are lit from below, have an almost surrealistic quality. Olivier Salvan portrays Jourdain as a large, plump, still quite young, naive and generous enthusiast. When he falls asleep at the end of the sublime, extended dialogue en musique between three singers, which comes not long after the opening of the comedie-ballet, his large, soft, oval face is propped to one side like a Chinese mask. After 1968's political assassinations and street riots, the once vaunted idealism the 60's went south for good in 1969. The artistic metaphors for the unraveling of The Age of Aquarius encompassed variously Gimme Shelter, the documentary of The Stones' disastrous Altamont free concert, and Dennis Hopper's idealism-gone-sour road picture, Easy Rider. It's rock score was an instant counter-culture classic, a collection anchored by Steppenwolf's road anthem chestnut "Born to Be Wild" and its cautionary "The Pusher," a song that underscored the film's frank portrayal of drug use (one that's given a more lighthearted hearing on Fraternity of Man's "Don't Bogart Me"). Other standouts include the Holy Modal Rounders' loopy "If You Want To Be A Bird" and Byrds' leader Roger McGuinn's "Ballad of Easy Rider" and faithful cover of Dylan's "It's Alright , Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)." Licensing concerns kept the soundtrack from compact disc until 2000, but this deluxe, slip-cased double-disc set not only expands on that edition's shortcoming (returning The Band's version of "The Weight" to its rightful place), but adds an additional 18 emblematic tracks "inspired" by the film and its turbulent times. Balanchine's three-part, evening-long ballet, Jewels, is one of the jewels of his output. Created in 1967, Jewels revisits the central pillars of his glorious career. Thus, the first of the trio, Emeralds, to music by Fauré, is an homage to the French school of ballet; a Romantic episode in which soft-core lyricism comes to the fore. The second ballet, set to Stravinsky, Rubies, celebrates American dance virtues, filled with sexy Broadway and jazz references. Finally, Diamonds, with music from Tchaikovsky, takes us to Mr. B's roots in St. Petersburg with a dazzling tribute to Russian ballet tradition. Each of the works is pure Balanchine, full of the abstract stage patterns, novel arm and feet movements, and virtuoso fireworks typical of his style. Jewels is superb in this video taken from live 2005 performances of the National Opera Ballet in its home playing field, the jewel box of Paris' Palais Garnier. The French company excels in meeting Balanchine's demands. All the featured principals turn in breathtaking performances and the highlight may be the way they turn Diamonds, which often goes flat in performance, into a thrilling experience. The costumes and sets, designed by Christian Lacroix, are precisely what this ballet needs, with backdrops of green for Emeralds, red, Rubies, and a cool blue crossed by a glittering cloud-like necklace for Diamonds. The video direction captures the feeling of being in the hall, with full-stage shots interspersed with views of soloists or ensemble sections that are never too close-up and respect the need for air and space around the dancers. Included is an excellent documentary film about Balanchine and Jewels, with cogent interviews and exemplary excerpts from the ballet.
